

Leon Howard Harouff, age 85, passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021, in Midland, Michigan. He was born on February 9, 1936 in Bath County, Virginia, son of the late Howard Harper Harouff and Eva Grace (Beverage). On December 26, 1959 at the First Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, Virginia he married his sweetheart Frances Grey Jones, who preceded him in death.
He graduated from Wilson Memorial High School, class of 1953, in Fishersville, Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard serving his country as a sniper guard at Fort Knox and did search and rescue missions as a pilot and amateur radio licensed operator. He attended Bridgewater College (Mathematics and Chemistry), Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Chemical Engineering), James Madison University and the University of Virginia (Statistics). He worked for General Electric and Genicom Corporation designing and running their electroplating processes for 28 years. He then worked for Macdermid Enthone Inc. as an electroplating consultant for east coast plants and the Norfolk Naval Base. After his retirement from the chemical industry, he started his own printing business, Custom Processing Inc., which he ran for fourteen years until donating the business to Eastern Mennonite University.
Leon was a longtime member of the former Waynesboro Country Club. He was a member of the American Electroplaters Society (AES), serving as a board member for many years. He was a board member and served as president for many years of the Waynesboro Community Concert Association. He was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years where he served in positions as Cubmaster and Scoutmaster at the unit level. Served as a unit commissioner at the district level. He served on the Camp Shenandoah camping committee. At the council level for Stonewall Jackson Area Council he served as the Council Commissioner and then served on the Executive Board for over 30 years and served as the Council Assistant Treasurer. He was a Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow.
Leon grew up in the Fishersville United Methodist Church and then in 1960 joined the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro, Virginia. From 1968-1973 he lived in Richmond, Virginia and attended the Presbyterian church there. In 1973 he moved his family back to Waynesboro and attended the First Presbyterian Church there for the rest of his life. He served as a Deacon and an Elder and was an usher for most of his life in the church. He enjoyed music, golf, fishing, traveling, Scouting, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his spouse and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Mary Frances Curd, sister-in-law Patricia Jones, and brother-in-law Nelson Crum. He is survived by his sister Ruth Crum of Waynesboro, Virginia, Children: Paul (Jerry Hoover) Harouff of Waynesboro, Virginia, Leslee (Joe) Leary of Chantilly, Virginia, and Christine (Brendan) Henriquez of Midland, Michigan. He is also survived by his Grandchildren: Christopher (Jackie) Leary, Nathan (Nina Nguyen) Henriquez, Sean Leary and Grace Henriquez, Great Granddaughter Wendy, Nieces: Dawn Haden, Evon Jennifer Rodgers, Nephews: Gary (Debbie) Crum, Michael (Sandra) Crum and Patrick Haden, Sister-in-laws: Bette (Gill) Haden and Ellen Williams, Brother-in-law Henry Curd.
Funeral Services for Leon will include a burial service at 11:00 am Saturday, November 6, 2021 at the Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Rd, Waynesboro, VA 22980, a Memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church, 249 S Wayne Ave, Waynesboro, VA 22980 at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 6, 2021. A reception where Leon’s family will receive friends will be held after the service from 3:00-5:00 pm.
