

He was born August 23, 1926 a son of the late Mary Carter Floyd Courtney and James Wyatt Floyd.
He registered for the United States Army in August of 1944 and was drafted December 19th. He was sent to Fort Meade, Maryland and completed his field training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia April 7, 1945.
Upon completion of Parachute Specialist Training he earned the right to wear his “Boots” and “Wings” of the United States Army Paratroopers at Fort Benning, Georgia on May 24, 1945. He spent the last three years of his Army career serving in World War ll and was stationed in Japan. On January 28, 1949 he was discharged holding the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On July 17, 1951 he began working at CFW Telephone Company in Waynesboro Virginia as a post hole digger. In October of 1955 he was transferred to Clifton Forge, VA, and returned to the Waynesboro Exchange in 1960 where he was promoted to the Assistant Plant Manager of Communications. After 37 years of service he retired on September 1, 1988.
He was a member of the Sherando United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School. He was also a charter member of the Sherando-Lyndhurst Ruritan Club with fifty-two years of service, having served as President and Treasurer. He was founder and served on the Board of Supervisors committee of the Sherando Community Recycling Center. He was very dedicated to supporting the community and would help where ever needed.
He enjoyed farming, baseball, working puzzles and following world events. He was known as a modest man, always provided for his family, a hard worker and could fix anything.
On April 30, 1949 he married his sweetheart Isabell Back who preceded him in death on December 31, 2012. They were blessed with 63 years of marriage.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his mentor and favorite Uncle, James Harry Patterson and wife Lillian Carter Patterson, and his step-father William Raymond Courtney.
Survivors include three children; Bonnie Ellen Floyd Munson and husband Kenneth, Lewis Anthony “Tony” Floyd and wife Teresa, Brenda Elaine Floyd Price and her husband Chuck, as well as six grandchildren; Buddy Munson, Michael Wood, Brent Floyd, Brittany Floyd, Eric Price, Brandy Marsh and twelve great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday September 12, 2014 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes by Charles Ramsey. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park with military honors provided by American Legion Post 340.
Active pallbearers will be Chuck Price, Buddy Munson, Byron Lunsford, James Brenneman, Michael Wood and Brent Floyd.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and family members.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
