He was born April 17, 1935 in Waynesboro the son of the late Ernest and Eva Morris Hitt.
He retired from McQuay as a machinist.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Hitt, three daughters; Twinkle D. Tibbs and husband Hal, Ginger K. Knott, Julie A. Christensen and husband Keith all of Waynesboro, as well as nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Following cremation a graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Monday December 29, 2014 at Augusta Memorial Park by Rev. Karen Edwards.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, 201 W. Broad Street Waynesboro, VA 22980.
