

She was born July 17, 1927 in Augusta County, daughter of the late Everett “Jerry” Desper and Madie Trainum Desper.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Everett “Junior” Desper, daughter-in-law, Theresa Monroe; granddaughter, Cindy Stevens and mother and father-in-law, Leonard and Geneva Cash Monroe.
Mrs. Monroe was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church where she had taught Sunday School. She Loved to bowl and fish and watching her grandchildren play sports. She also was an avid Atlanta Braves Fan.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, L. Chester Monroe, whom she married on September 18, 1944; two sons, Bobby Monroe and his wife Cathy of Lynchburg; Gary Monroe of Fishersville and friend, JoAnn Hewitt; one daughter, Diane Layman and her husband Doug of Fishersville; two sisters, Rosalie Leitch and her husband Bob of Richmond, JoAnn Newcomb and her husband, Coupie of Bedford; grandchildren, Tricia Calamos, Robyn Brandes, Travis Monroe, Chet Monroe, Amy Thorne and her husband Matt and Danielle Coffey and her husband Derick; great-grandchildren, Meghan Kennon, Kristin Calamos, Jonah and Kayla Brandes, Travis Hewitt, II, Justin, Katie and Casey Stevens. She is also survived by a special friend, Ellie Pelar.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes of Waynesboro.
A service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Pastor Randy Blankenship and April Cranford, Associate Minister officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Buck and Lester Brown, Ben Thomas, Neil Cash, Allen Monroe and Doug Monroe.
Honorary pallbearers will be family and friends attending the service.
The family would like to give thanks to her special caregivers, Elizabeth Bryant and Amy Brown.
