Mildred Jean Cole Shumate

Mildred was born November 22, 1937 in Wytheville Va, the daughter of

Garnett K. Cole and Elva Lawson Cole McNiel. She was predeceased by her parents, and by her stepfather Eugene McNiel. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert H. Shumate, three children and their spouses, and twelve grandchildren. They are:

Daughter, Karen Van Stee and husband Stephen of Edinburg Va, and their children: Kristen, Erica and husband Bryan;

Son, David Shumate and wife Linda of Phoenix Az, and their children: Ruth, Robert and wife Jenel, Katherine, Stephen, Mary, and Joanna;

Son Stephen Shumate and wife Maggie of Mount Airy Md, and their children: Ben, Matt, Laura and Emily.

She is also survived by her stepmother, Jean Cole of Bonifay FL.

Mildred graduated from George Wythe High School, Wytheville, class of 1954, and Mary Washington College, class of 1958.

She taught school for some years and later served as an interviewer with the Virginia Employment Commission, but her premier devotion was to her family, providing a never ending outpouring of love to each and every one. Her favorite activity was shopping for her grandchildren of whom she knew the wishes of each one.

Mildred was a devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church,

serving in many ways. And strangers also received her love as she delivered Meals On Wheels.

The family will receive friends, Friday evening July 22, 6-8 p.m., at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Home, 618 W. Main Street, Waynesboro.

The service celebrating Mildred’s life will held Saturday, July 23, 11:00 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church, 500 S. Wayne Avenue. Waynesboro.

Interment will be at 3 p.m. the same afternoon at Thornrose Cemetery, 1041 W. Beverley Street, Staunton.
