Nathan Alva Showalter

Nathan Alva Showalter, 73, of Waynesboro, passed away on Friday, March 26, 2021 at his residence. Mr. Showalter was born January 25, 1948, a son of the late Alva Henry and Mary Frances (Driver) Showalter. He received his high school education from the American School, Chicago, IL throught their correspondence program and was a life-long member of Springdale Mennonite Church In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rhoda Showalter Survivors include two brothers, Amos Showalter and wife, Carol of Waynesboro, Samuel Showalter and wife, Christine of Verona; nephews, Mark Showalter and wife, Hannah, Evan Showalter and wife, Amy; nieces, Laura Castro and husband, Leo, Lisa Walters and husband, Elijah, Emily Showalter and husband, Engin, Sarah Brandt and husband, Justin; great nieces and nephews, Sophia, Lenna, Nadia, Mercy, Justus, Dominik and Lydia. Nathan enjoyed numerous activities and hobbies related to a strong interest in all things mechanical. He collected and repaired automotive speedometers, various mechanical counters and clocks of many types. He maintained a strong interest in weather instruments, refinished clock cases and other furniture, was an avid chronicler of events and keeper of detailed records. For many years he used a specially adapted mower on the lawn an orchard around his home. Beyond these abilities, he is most remembered for his skills as an artist. Due to physical limitations, he found that colored pencil was the medium that worked best for him. By age twelve he was creating line drawings with black pencil, transitioning to colored pencil which eventually led to more realism using brilliant floors with great detail. His pictures include sunsets, mountains, trees, houses, roads and fences. Many also have an inspirational Bible verse reminding us that our Creator is the source of beauty and art itself. Most importantly, Nathan’s faith sustained him and inspired those who knew him. His knowledge that Jesus Christ had given him a personal relationship with God and that all things would be made new in the next life were realities that stayed with him, firm to the end. 1 Corinthians 15:53-57 (ESV) For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is writer: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. An outdoor memorial service will be held at Springdale Mennonite Church at 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 30, 2021.
