

Born on June 22, 1926 in Weyers Cave, he was a son of the late Charles Richard and Ethel Knicely Smallwood.
He served in the United States Army, was a member of Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, and retired after 38 years of service from DuPont, as well as a building contractor and farmer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Parr Smallwood on August 25, 2009; a brother, Nelson; five sisters, Alma, Helen, Blanche, Evelyn, Angelean; and a grandson, Jason Smallwood.
Survivors include four sons, Paul R. Smallwood, Jr., of Ft. Defiance, Wayne Smallwood and his wife Jane of Waynesboro, Steve Smallwood and his wife Charlotte of Waynesboro, Dean Smallwood and his wife Regina of Crimora, a daughter, Rita Elaine Smallwood at home; eight grandchildren, Gary, Larry and his wife Susie, Brent, Mike and his wife Autumn, Brian and Jessica Smallwood, Melissa Ervine and her husband Forest, Stacy Truslow and her husband Bo and Ciara Diehl; two brothers, Mervin Lee Smallwood and his wife Betty of New Hope, Ivan Leon Smallwood of Staunton; nine great-grandchildren, Jesse Smallwood, Tyler Ervine, Hunter Smallwood, Torie Smallwood, Garrett Smallwood, Brooke Truslow, Alston Truslow, Izack McAllister and Owyn Ervine.
He also leaves a special friend, Harvey R. Ball, II.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 West Main Street, with the Reverends Daniel Wine and John Glick officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery with military rites provided by the American Legion Post 340.
Active pallbearers will be Gary, Larry, Brent, Brian, Jesse Smallwood, Forest Ervine and Bo Truslow.
Honorary pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m., until 8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren or the New Hope Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
