

He was born in Wintergreen on August 4, 1927, a son of the late John William and Mary Davis Hughes.
Vance was a United State Navy Veteran assigned to the USS Franklin during WW ll, a member of American Legion Post 2424, Lee Lodge 209, retired after 38 years of service from DuPont and a member of West Waynesboro Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers John W. Hughes, Jr., and Alexander “Bubs” Hughes.
Survivors include his wife, Dollie B. Hughes; daughter, Beverly Hughes Scott and husband, Thomas of Smith Mountain Lake; sister, Gean Thrasher of Gainesville, Georgia; grandchildren, Betsy Raghu , D. Keith Wood, Stephanie Scott Hess and husband, Ronnie; sister-in-law, Ollie Hughes.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Chad Grondin officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Christian Church Cemetery with military rites provided by American Legion Post 340.
Active pallbearers will be Lewis Gurkin, Lyle Fitzgerald, L. G. Ferrier, Bill Ferrier, Paul Gochenour, Steve Conner, Jim Nichols and Gene Kline.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at the funeral home.
