Tim was born July 16, 1948, in Alexandria, VA, son of the late Dr. Harold H. and Jane M. Bostwick Hawfield. He grew up in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase, MD area.
Tim came to Waynesburg in 1967 to attend Waynesburg College, where he received a Bachelor's degree in history. While at Waynesburg, he met his wife, Carol, whom he married on December 19, 1970.
After graduating, he served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1974 within the Army Security Agency (ASA) as a Mandarin Chinese linguist.
From 1975 to 1978 he worked as a psychiatric ICU ward manager at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. During his time there, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Management at the University of Maryland. In 1976, Tim and Carol welcomed their only son, Timothy Jr. (Timmy).
In June of 1979, Tim joined the Waynesburg Borough Police Department. In May of 1981, Tim was promoted to Chief of Police. He served and protected the community in this role for 32 years, during which time he was recognized with several awards and citations. One of his proudest achievements was being instrumental in promoting the "Officer Phil" child safety program in area elementary schools.
Tim was an Eagle Scout, former Scout Master for troop 1289, District Chairman, and on the Eagle Scout Board of Review. He was a little league baseball coach, and an "American Policing" instructor at Waynesburg College. He was a Civil War enthusiast and was happy to share his knowledge with anyone who was willing to listen. He was also the founder of the "Husband Calling Contest" at the annual Rain Day Festival, which he found highly entertaining. Sadly, the contest did not withstand the test of time.
He was an active member in the Fraternal Order of Police, Salvation Army and First Baptist Church of Waynesburg. He was a former member of Western PA Chiefs of Police Association, Citizen's Wellness Committee, PA Safe Kids Coalition, Central Greene Task Force on Youth, Greene County Drug Task Force, the Boy Scouts of America, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, "STOP" grant committee, "M.A.G.I.C." committee, and advisory board member of the Waynesburg College Criminal Justice department.
In 2013, he was the proud recipient of the Waynesburg Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award.
He was a devoted and loving husband and father, a proud grandfather, a loyal brother, a dear friend, and a mentor to many.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; a son, Timothy Jr. and daughter-in-law, Betsy; two grandchildren, Camryn and Haley; a brother, Michael Hawfield, and his wife, Beth, of Homer, AK; a sister, Molly Gordon, and her husband, Jim, of Jacksonville, FL, and their children Jay, Jane and Emily; brother-in-law, Patrick McAndrews and his wife, Janine, and their children, Taylor and Reily.
A receiving of friends will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the First Baptist Church, 303 W.
