Although it’s been over four years since Bessie left this earth, I still think about her. I was a class ahead of her in high school, but as a school-mate and neighbor up the street on Poplar,  I remember her well. I admired her even back then, and still do. I followed her career as she became a true professional in more ways than in sports. She was a special person with a kind heart and had the ability to help everyone around her feel better about themselves.  I’m glad I knew her!—Carole Wilson Modlin

Bess, it was an honor to be part of your softball team even as a scorekeeper. I'd been a fan for years and was always amazed that such an intimidating pitcher could be such a kind and gentle person. You will be missed.

Bess you were one of the greatest softball players ever and I am so proud to have had the opportunity to have met you, played against you, and last but not least, know you as a teammate. You will be missed.

Bess, you always threw the first pitch at my left leg when I played against you! I'm so glad we played with each other for so many years. Had you started the last game in the national championships your team WOULD have been national champions -you were the very, very best.

Bess was such a daunting figure on the mound. I can still remember the awe of batting against her the very first time. She always had my respect as a player and I was grateful for the chance to become friends as the years passed. It's my hope that now, once again, she is terrifying batters with all the other players who have gone before. Hey Bess, save me a spot.

I was so sorry to learn about Bess passing away.  We had some wonderful times playing softball and traveling to many different states to play top notch teams. She was an awesome pitcher and I will never forget her. Rest in peace buddy.

Beas was my hero.  She was always kind to me even if I made an error while she was pitching.  She was an awesome person and a great teammate.

I was saddened to hear the news of Bess's passing. I have great memories of Bess playing softball and enjoying social times with her and many team-mates after the games, especially "crackin' a dozen Md.steamed crabs" !! May She Rest In Peace.

So sad to hear pic Bess's passing, but i know she's at peace and no longer in pain.  Thinking of her brings back loads of memories.  I loved catching for her.  I can still see her knuckle ball floating in the air.  She was one of a kind.

I am so sorry to hear of Bessie's passing.  I can remember as well as if it were yesterday when we were in school together.  I always loved her smile.  She will be greatly missed. GOD bless the family.

I knew you were special from the moment we met.  We became fast friends first from afar and then right here at home when you finally realized your goal of coming home.  You were one of the most authentic people I have ever known.  You said it like it was and I never had to wonder what you were feeling or what you thought.  I will never again watch a softball game, see a boxer, close a bag of chips, read a poem, read a Karen Kingsbury book, or hear about Baltimore or D.C. without thinking of you and smiling as I remember.  Rest in Peace until we meet again!  Much love always.
