

Reverend Charles Eugene Payne, 69, of Waynesville, went home to be with the Lord on February 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Madison County on February 8, 1957, to the late Isaac Francis Payne and Georgia Marie Green Payne.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by infant brother, Edward Payne; siblings, Nina Payne, Shirley Ledford (Guy), James Payne, Robert Payne, Lee Payne, brother in laws, Mack Rathbone, Bob Roberts, and Guy Ledford.
Charles was a devoted husband, family man, and friend. He found great joy in spending time with his family, playing and singing bluegrass music, ginseng hunting and creating memories together. Known for his gentle spirit and generous heart, Charles never had an unkind word to say about anyone. His warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for those around him will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Charles loved preaching and ministering to all who surrounded him. He was a longtime member of Hyatt Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 43 years, Peggy Loraine Payne; his sister, Ethel Rathbone, Betty Roberts, Mary Worley (Billy), Joyce Gosnell (Leonard), Debbie Payne (Chris Johnson), and his mother-in-law, Annie Mae Bolden; He cherished all his nieces and nephews and brother and sister-in-laws as his own, especially a special niece, Tiffany James.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2026, also at Garrett Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Green Hill Cemetery.
Officiating will be the Reverend Cameron Bolden, Reverend Coy Wheeler, and Reverend Dwayne Riddle.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jeremy Bolden, Mitchell Bolden, Riley Bolden, Tyler Bolden, Walker Bolden, Jayden Bolden, Austin Bolden, Gary Lanning.
