

WWII Navy Veteran Maggie Valley, NC - James “Jim” Greene, 89, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2016 at The Homestead. He was born December 10, 1926 to the late Vance and Minnie Rathbone Greene. Jim served his country honorably in the US Navy. During his military service he was a gunner in three different campaigns during WWII. He retired from Dayco Industries following 29 years of service. He also was a longtime firefighter and Chief for the town of Maggie Valley. He was the last charter member of the Victory Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Aletha Finger Greene; son, Steven Greene; and two brothers and two sisters. Left to cherish his memory is son, Ed Greene; two daughters, Elaine Welch (Jerry) and Susan Smith (Jimmy); six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, January 12, 2016 in the Chapel of Garrett Funeral Home with the Reverend Jerry Nelson and Reverend Johnny Swanger officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Garrett Funeral Home. Burial will be held at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.
