Reverend Dr. Joseph Cecil Saunders

Joseph Cecil Saunders, age 90, of Asheville, NC, passed away on February 18, 2026. Joe was born September 5, 1935 in Macon County to the late Walter Cleveland Saunders and Fannie Elizabeth Saunders. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Mildred Saunders. He was the last child living out of 13 children. Joe is survived by his three daughters: Sheila (Dean Gibbs), Sandra, and Sherrie (Jamie Dyer); six grandchildren: Drew, Zachary, Cori, Katelyn, Lane and Justin; and nine great grandchildren, with the 10th on the way. He loved being surrounded by all of his children. Also, survived is his sister-in-law, Ketrena Saunders. The family wishes to thank a special niece, Judy Shuler and her husband Jerry for their continuous love and commitment to him through the years.

Joe preached and pastored at many Baptist churches in WNC and SC for 62 years. He had a doctorate degree from Bethany Theological Seminary. In addition to ministering, Joe had a career in textiles, working in supervisory roles at Asheville Hosiery, Win-tex, and American Enka. He was also an Army veteran.

One of the things he enjoyed the most was being surrounded by people and exemplifying the Love of God. Joe was an amazing father and made it a priority to raise his daughters in a Christian home. His love was unconditional and he was always there when any of the children or grandchildren needed him. Joe will truly be missed by those who loved him! A private service was held on February 22, 2026.
