My earliest memories are of spending time with Nana and Buddy at the mountain house, enjoying what would come to be known as “Nana breakfasts” - huge spreads of grits, eggs, bacon, pancakes (with powdered sugar and maple syrup), fruit, tomatoes and more. I learned so many lessons from her over the years. Nana taught me the joy of making things beautiful, just for the sake of them being beautiful. Her garden, outfits, hair, makeup, and her home, always immaculate, always bright and blooming, just because.
I love to host, a passion and skill I learned from Nana. She taught me the joy of sharing a home cooked meal with friends and family. She taught me that “anything worth doing is worth doing right,” and the importance of a handwritten card for any occasion. I loved learning how to make snow cream, grits, and peanut butter cookies- and how to do a lot with a little (like making snow boots out of trash bags). She taught me the joy and reward of hard work.
She loved taking pictures. During trips to see her and Buddy, or after a family dinner, she had her camera ready. Thanks to her, I have a plethora of beautiful photo albums chronicling our adventures to treasure. We loved looking at old photo albums together- learning about her life and reflecting on the memories we made together in Canton, Macon, and beyond was so special to me.
To remember her, I will feed the birds, water my plants, and invite my friends over for dinner. I’ll send cards, bake desserts, and call when someone is on my mind. I’ll brush on some mascara and throw on earrings before leaving the house, even if- especially if- it's just to go to the grocery store. I will make things beautiful, just because. I am so thankful for years of laughter, conversation, delicious meals, and lessons. She was a thoughtful friend, wonderful grandmother, devoted wife and mother, and so much more. I’ll miss her every day.

Shirley was a true Southern lady: kind, thoughtful, creative, beautiful. 
She always had a smile and encouraging words and touched the lives of many with her encouragement. I know-she sent me many cards and notes of encouragement when I was ill. 
She will be missed.

I was a ten-year-old flower girl at the wedding of Shirley Jones and my brother, Jimmy Hooper in 1957.  That was when Shirley became a part of my family and my life.  She wrote a long note in last year’s Christmas card telling me she was glad that I was a part of her life.  I did not realize at the time, but I think it was her goodbye to me.
Shirley was amazing and multi-talented.  She was a great cook and could make a meal from bits and pieces - she said her mother called those jerk meals.  
She was an excellent seamstress and kept an immaculate and beautifully decorated house. 
She dressed to perfection, including jewelry, and once chastised me for shopping in sweats.
Shirley grew up on a farm and learned hard work at an early age.  She remained a farm girl at heart and her work ethic never wavered - she was the ultimate energizer bunny, tackling any task, big or small.  She could plaster and paint with the best.  She did not know the meaning of “that can’t be done!”  She said that anything worth doing was worth doing right.
We shared a love of flowers, and she introduced me to wonderful plants such as Creeping Jenny, Joe Pye Weed, Chicken Foot and Pencil Cacti.  She kept her flower gardens as she did her house, immaculate- weeds had no place in Shirley’s garden.  I know the Yucca plants shuddered when they saw her coming with her mattock, which she continued to use until just a few months ago.
Shirley loved life and enjoyed every moment as it passed and believed that everyday things are where the beauty of life lies.
No more tomorrows we can share but yesterdays are always there.  Until we meet again on the other side - I will look for you near the flowers.  I am glad you were a part of my life.
