Vera Alice Keener

Waynesville-Vera A. Keener, 83, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, August 26, 2015. Vera was born in Yancey County on May 22, 1932, to the late William and Zula Rice McMahan. Vera enjoyed working in her garden and in her flower beds. She was an exceptional cook and was a published poet. Vera will be remembered for her faithful work at her church. In addition to her parents Vera was preceded in death by her husband Jack Keener; two daughters, Angela Keener and Rebecca Browning; and two sisters, Azalee Riddle and Vena Allen. Vera is survived by two sons, Marvin Keener (Karen) and David Keener; two daughters, Regina Hawkins (Darryl) and Glenda Green; grandchildren, Angela Ledford, Amber Messer, Cheyenne Keener, Mark Wheeler, Alice Reece, Daniel Green, and Brandy Green; and great-grandchildren, Addison Messer, Arley Messer, Harper Ledford, Jack Reece, Mack Reece, Celeste Baros, Stephan Rogers, McKencie Green, and Alexis Crook. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, August 30, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Reverend Ted Reynolds, the Reverend Jake Cagle and the Reverend Jeff Heatherly officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
