Barry R. Schactman, Professor Emeritus of Drawing and Painting at Washington University, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family and friends, on Friday, July 3, 2015, after a long bout with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Barry was born in1930, in Newark, New Jersey, to Joseph and Ann Schactman. He served two years in the Army, and then enrolled at the University of Florida in Miami on a boxing scholarship. One of his classes was life drawing, and it was in that class that his love of figure drawing began.
The sudden death of his beloved father brought him back home to help support his mother and sister. In the evenings, he began to attend classes at the Art Students League in New York City,
Barry married his sweetheart Phyllis Skopp and the two moved to Philadelphia where he enrolled at Tyler School of Art.
A year later, he received a full scholarship to Yale University. Professor Joseph Albers taught Barry a great deal about color. But it was visiting artist Rico LeBrun who was a great inspiration to Barry, and who became his mentor.
During that time, their son Joseph was born.
At age 29, Barry accepted a teaching position at the University of Texas in Austin. During that time Phyllis and Barry welcomed their daughter Amy.
In 1962, Barry applied for other teaching positions around the country. He accepted a position at Washington University in St. Louis, under the direction Dean Ken Hudson. Barry taught anatomy, figure drawing and painting for the next 30 years. During his teaching, he often inspired his students with the phrase “I invite you to see.” He received teaching awards, and when he retired the university hosted a retrospective show of his work.
Barry survived the death of his dear wife Phyllis in 1985 and his son Joseph in 2000. After retiring, he remained in St Louis, and devoted his time to his work.
Barry is survived by his beloved daughter Amy Schactman, his sister Rhoda Bartels, his granddaughter Lilly O’Donnell, and his loving and devoted wife, Ana Grace Schactman.
His family is grateful for the loving care given to Barry by Helene Frankel, Bethany Miller, Rajmonda Mehmetaj, and Glenda Moore. We are also grateful for the compassion of the members of SSM Hospice Care Services.
A short service will be held at Gerber Chapel in Webster Groves, 12:30 PM, Tuesday , July 7, 2015, with burial immediately following at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Alzheimer’s Association or Doctors without Borders.
A memorial for Barry Schactman will be planned for a later date. May he rest in Peace.
