Maria "Gela" San Roman, age 90, of Progreso, Texas passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023. Maria was born on October 8, 1932 in Matehuala, San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Ladislado and Maria Del Refugio Salas.
At the age of 16, Maria came to the United States with her mother and brother where she met her husband Jose years later, and became U.S. citizens. Maria was known for her charitable work with the Clinicas del Valle bringing funding for additional clinics while being part of their Board of Directors as Patient Advocate. She received many recognitions and awards, while being involved with the Hidalgo County Headstart programs, making sure children received an education and a good meal. Maria was heavily involved with her community and helping those in need. She helped lobby with various politicians to bring water to the small towns including the City of Progreso. In addition, Maria worked at the Progreso Independent School District as the head cook. Upon retirement, she continued her focus on her husband, children and grandchildren. Maria was very family oriented, loved traveling, spending time with family and took great pride in cooking for them.
Maria was preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, Jose San Roman Sr.; her son Francisco San Roman Sr.; and her parents Ladislado and Maria Del Refugio Salas.
Maria is survived by her children, Jose (Estrella) San Roman Jr., Armando (Celia) San Roman, Mario (Jeanette) San Roman and Sylvia (Jesus Valle) San Roman; her brother Raymundo (Esperanza) Salas; her grandchildren Francisco San Roman Jr., Juan Jose San Roman, Jonathon San Roman, Brenda San Roman, Joe San Roman III, Jessie San Roman, Conchita San Roman, Amanda San Roman, Armando San Roman Jr., Ashley San Roman, Aisha San Roman, Arman San Roman, April San Roman, Jasmine San Roman, Melanie San Roman, Mario San Roman Jr., Noah Valle, Ramses Valle and Jennabella Valle; 22 great grandchild, and 20 great great grandchildren.
Visitation for Maria will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM with a Rosary recited at 7:00 PM at Funeraria del Angel Highland. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 10:00 AM at St. Pius Catholic Church, followed by the interment at Highland Memorial Park, Weslaco, Texas 78599.
