Darold J. Brophy, 85, passed away at the Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines on Friday, February 22, 2013. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at McLaren’s Chapel. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at McLaren’s with entombment at Resthaven Mausoleum.
Darold was born April 24, 1927 to Ralph and Pearl (Hanson) Brophy in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended Des Moines schools graduating from North High School in 1945. Before graduating from high school he was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII. After serving in WWII he joined the U.S. Air Force.
On April 30, 1948 he married his high school sweetheart, Julila Lowe. This union brought them three children. He enjoyed sporting activities, NASCAR racing and was an avid poker player having won tournaments. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and shooting pool. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Darold was employed at Central Life after his discharge from the Army until he was recalled by the Air Force Reserves for the Korean Conflict. He continued his 20 year employment at Central Life after his Air Force discharge. He then worked for the Mid Iowa Computer Center and retired in 1989 after 24 years.
Darold is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Julila; two daughters, Vicki Head and Tami Lewis; son, Todd; grandson, Corey Lewis; and a sister, Elaine Freisenhahn of Adkins, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ramona.
He will be remembered as a loving husband and wonderful father and will be missed by all who knew him. His spirit and sense of humor touched many lives and will not be forgotten.
