Frederick William Coleman, 89, better known as Bill, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2024, just shy of his 90th birthday. Bill was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. No services are planned at this time.
Bill was born February 21, 1935 in Oskaloosa to Frederick Sr. and Mildred (Hawkins) Coleman. He was a dedicated civil servant. Bill retired from the Iowa Lottery in 1997 after a long and dedicated career. After retirement, he found fulfillment in driving the West Des Moines Human Services bus, a role that allowed him to serve his community and connect with others.
An avid golfer, Bill played for Drake University and carried his love of the game throughout his life. Even in his later years, he could often be found on the golf course, particularly in Florida, where he spent his winters enjoying the year-round golfing opportunities. His love for the sport was only matched by his love for his family and friends, whom he cherished deeply.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Vicki Coleman, of West Des Moines; sister, Susan Bennett of Carlisle; and four daughters, Kelly (Greg) Patterson of Urbandale, Sharon Matthews of Indianapolis, Beth (Chris) Collins of Clarksville, and Carla Smith of Urbandale. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, John, and his parents, Mildred and Fred Coleman.
Bill's legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Bill's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization close to their hearts.
Bill will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
