Jon E. Batesole, 84, passed away at home on May 26, 2024 after a very short illness, surrounded by his loving wife, Claudia and their family. A Celebration of Life will be held June 21, 2024 from 12:00 to 3:00 pm at the Middlebrook Mercantile, 4125 Cumming Ave in Cumming, IA.
Jon was born to Lyle and Helen (Finley) Batesole on July 14, 1939. After graduating from Drake University, Jon started his career as a shoe buyer for Dayton’s in Minneapolis. His next business endeavor was the purchase of Downing Hardware in Marshalltown. Jon went on to have a 40 year career with General Growth Properties in Des Moines and Chicago. Despite the many hours he worked, he made time for several meaningful hobbies including gardening, extensive travel and model trains. Jon spent 50 years building a circus train layout that is now part of the train collection at the Iowa State Fair. He even joined Claudia for a "weekend job" at the Cumming Orchard where the two of them lived and worked for several years beginning in 1991. In 2001, the Batesoles retired to the British Virgin Islands where for 17 years they enjoyed sharing their love of the Caribbean with any family or friends who were able to visit. The last several years found them splitting their time between Florida and Iowa. Wherever they were, they made new friends along the way.
Jon was so much more than the malls he built or the trees he planted. He spent his entire life taking care of other people and making sure everyone was enjoying life as much as he did, often over a pizza.
He is survived by wife, Claudia (Smith) Batesole; and the 'family forest'… daughters, Teri (Dave) Chelsvig, Vicki Lee (David Bagby) and Kate Blomgren (Alastair Bullett); son, Jim (Katy) Blomgren; grandchildren, Jermi Kopsa (Brooke Yuska), Shay (Will) Scholtes, Brooklyn (Greg) Barnett, Hunter Blomgren, Madelyn Blomgren, Max Bullett and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn; father, Lyle; mother, Helen, son, Jeffrey, and Joan Curson.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, please direct all memorials to Suncrest Hospice, Des Moines.
