Lois Fern Howard (Grandma Pie) died peacefully in her home, February 19, 2022, surrounded by generations of family. Lois was born April 4, 1921 in Burnside, Iowa - the fourth of five children born to Earl and Lana (Schram) Coffin.
Lois enjoyed a loving and idyllic rural childhood. Traveling to California during the war to live with a sister whose husband was deployed, Lois met Victor Arnold Howard. Victor – big-hearted, charismatic, and handsome, was smitten with this cheerful, friendly, gorgeous, Iowa farm girl. They were a pair matched in heaven. Lois and Victor were married on April 18, 1946 and returned to Iowa, moving to West Des Moines.
Shortly after the birth of their fourth son, Lois was widowed and left to raise the boys, ages six, four, two and three weeks. Truly the love of her life, Lois never remarried after Victor’s death. At age 100, a tear would still fall when she spoke of Victor.
Despite her heartbreak Lois always exuded joy, meeting each struggle with a deep confidence that God was always with her. She spent a lifetime caring for her sons, 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She retired in her late 80s from Guide One Insurance, a job she truly loved. She also worked as a receptionist for Dr. Hess, and as a cashier at Magic Car Wash. Certainly, a visit with Lois was the best reason for a wash!
Lois's gift of hospitality and grace made her home the heartbeat of her neighborhood. Long after the kids outgrew backyard ball games they continued to visit Grandma Pie. She welcomed each visitor with a genuine and sincere interest and celebrated everyone's successes. How many cups of coffee were enjoyed at her table, how many hours of delightful conversation, how many phone calls shared, and visits made....She remained a constant source of encouragement. Lois lived out her faith, sharing the love of Jesus through radical kindness, selfless service and radiant joy. Her family was her greatest achievement and joy, beyond measure.
Her walk of faith began at Burnside Baptist and continued at Forest Avenue Baptist where she and Victor made lasting friendships. Later, Lois and the boys found a home at West Des Moines United Methodist where she continued to serve throughout her life. Friendships made there - especially the women of her Rebekah Circle - were great blessings to her.
Lois is survived by her four sons: William (Lynne), Gregory (Christine), Doug (Deb), and James; sister Lucille Zenor and many nieces and nephews who considered her their second mom. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved spouse, Victor; siblings Ina Jessen, Ruth Rufer and Vernon Coffin; and granddaughter Sarah Lana Howard.
Lois Howard is the very definition of a life well lived. We will be loving you ALWAYS.
