I am so sad, spoke with Sandi a while ago, just got back from visiting Sweden took our grandson there to attend school. Been trying to call Sandi but phone # did not work. Kerstin suggested google and here I am. My last cousin in the USA, only Jeanette and I left. I have nothing but great memories of our occasional conversations, God Bless Sandra.  I will inform those left in Sweden of Sandra’s passing.Warren

Sandi and I go waaay back.  I first met her when I dated and then married her brother.  Before we were married we went to visit her aunt  Sonia and Uncle Hugo in Chicago and all stayed in their apartment above the store.  We had such fun going downtown shopping and having lunch with Esther , Sonia, and Dot.  In the past few years after we both became widows we visited often and went to lunch with her cousins.  She never let me forget that she was 2 weeks younger than me.  I will miss her!




Since I am the oldest of all the cousins and 2nd cousins, I was probably the first she babysat and I had to go to Des Moines from Chicago to have her sit for me.  Many, many wonderful times and memories that will sustain me forever.  I loved all my Dad's cousins because they were the only family we had on that side and they are all fun to be with.   Loved the idea when my Dad said to everyone "pack it up, we are headed to Des Moines" .  Obviously, before 80 was done.  I too, Cheryl, loved to pick up the phone when I was driving (handsfree!) and give her a call.  No matter how far I was going I would have to sit in the car for awhile to finish our conversations.  Since Sandy was only a few years older than me, I was closer to her than her older sibs.  Looking forward to seeing the family next week in DM.

SO SORRY TO HEAR OF SANDI PASSING  WE LIVED NEIGHBORS  TO THEM FOR SEVERAL YEARS IN ALTOONA. THEY WERE GOOD NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS. I WILL MISS HER CHRISTMAS CARDS AND NEWSY LETTER .IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT HER FAMILY, SHE LOVED THEM ALL SO MUCH. SHE WILL BE MISSED BY ALL WHO KNEW HER.  LARRY AND JOAN

It is with heavy hearts that we will not be able to attend the memorial service for our dear friend Sandi.  We will be on a scheduled trip to Tennessee visiting family and friends. 

On the positive side, we are thankful we were able to visit and stay with Sandi this past August.  Our friendship goes back a long time to the point that we were almost family.  We were high school classmates with Don and of course met Sandi soon after they started dating.  We were married in February 1957 and Don proposed to Sandi the night of our wedding.  Later we stood up with them when they were married the following June.

We moved quite often during Mike’s career and Sandi and Don as well as Lisa and Alan visited us in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.  We had family in Iowa and travelled there almost every year.  We always made it a point to see the Hancocks and in later years often stayed with them.

After retirement we would meet in Minnesota for a fun time of visiting, dining, playing games, and perhaps a visit or two to a casino.  We always had an enjoyable time.
After we lost Don we of course continued to visit Sandi.  It turned out that we automatically stayed with her during our family visits and class reunions.  Sandi was always the best of hostesses and saw to it that we were well fed and comfortable.  She also served as a guide to keep us abreast of the many changes taking place in the West Des Moines/Altoona areas.  We continued to stay in touch with frequent telephone calls and emails.

It is comforting to know how much Sandi loved her family.  It is also comforting to think that Sandi and Don are once again united in a better place.  We will always cherish our memories about our love and friendship.

Oh and one more thing I learned to never ever call or try to visit when the Iowa Hawkeyes were playing football! She loved her Hawks!

Sandra was the youngest of the Johnson clan. Because if that, I think she probably baby sat most all of her nieces and nephews at some point.  Growing up I remember the fun times with the whole clan at Grandmas house, and the vacations in Minnesota and South Dakota.

 Starting in 2010 my mom and I started doing the Tour of Iowa.  When we passed through Des Moines we would stay with Aunt Sandra and she would join us on our adventures.   We visited old friends, went to Reiman gardens, the Boone Train, Kate Shelley Bridge, the covered bridges, and Clear Lake Iowa and more. We laughed and shared memories and made new memories. Even after my mom had passed I would stop and visit and have dinner with her on my way to see my brother.  I wouldn’t trade that time with her for anything. 

There were times she showed her stubborn Swede side but she always she loved all her family fiercely, and enjoyed life to the fullest. 

I will greatly miss being able to pick up the phone to call her, share my life and laugh with her and will miss spending time with her the next time I am in DesMoines.
