Shirley Mae Fruehling, passed away on November 20, 2025, at the age of 96. Shirley was born on Friday, August 23, 1929, in Keokuk, Iowa to parents Ernest Chance Sr. and Leona Chance. She was born at the beginning of the Great Depression. Shirley's other sibling, Ernest (Leo) Chance, Jr., was almost exactly 3 years older than Shirley.
Both sets of parents set up the first meeting between Shirley and her husband Max. They went to Olivet Nazarene College, and they got married in 1948. Shirley and Max had 3 children, David, Sandra, and Mark. Shirley is survived by her children, Sandra and Mark.
Shirley was a nurse attendant. She was a secretary for an insurance data analyst for many years at Equitable of Iowa Insurance. And of course, Shirley was a mother. She loved to talk, and she loved to listen. Shirley volunteered singing and playing the piano at her local church.
A funeral service will be held at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel & Mortuary, located at 801 19th Street, West Des Moines, IA, 50265, on November 25, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
Following the funeral service, a committal service will take place at the same venue from 11:00 am to 11:30 am.
