Born on March 25th, 1981, in Des Moines, Iowa Travis grew up with natural athletic talent and a generous heart. In his younger years he excelled in soccer, tae kwon do, and football. In high school he excelled in soccer, wrestling, track, and football. He graduated from Valley High School in 2000, and went on to Des Moines Area Community College and earned a Building Trades Diploma. He started out his professional life framing, and he even built his own house. He later created a meaningful career in trim carpentry, where he was respected not only for his skill and dedication but for the kindness and integrity he brought to his work each day.
Above all else, Travis loved the Lord and he was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Aurora, Briella, Coranna, and Lane; his father; Robert (Ginger) Perkins and his brother Tyler (Jessica) Perkins. His mother Nancy Perkins preceded him in death. He was a loving son, a loyal brother, a devoted husband, and a proud father. Whether coaching archery, helping with homework, church verses, teaching Sunday School or making everyone’s favorite dinner, he brought passion to whatever he did. He was one of a kind and a jack of all trades. He found his greatest joy in being present for the people he loved.
He had a passion for hunting and grew up spending many weekends with friends and family in and around Truro, Iowa. In addition to enjoying the outdoors, he was a great cook, whipping up breakfasts, lunches, and dinners with ease for his whole family. He would send the extra food to neighbors on the block who always told him he should open his own restaurant. Friends and family will remember his infectious laugh, his quick smile, and his willingness to lend a hand without hesitation.
A service to celebrate Travis’s life will be held on Monday, February 16th at 11am, with visitation on Sunday from 2pm to 5 pm at Valley Church in West Des Moines. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Valley Church’s Koinonia Fund in Karen Perkins’s name.
Though his time with us was far too short, the impact he made in 44 years will endure in the hearts of those who loved him. He will be remembered always and missed beyond measure.
