William F. Landholt (Bill), 88, a long time resident of West Des Moines, Iowa died Sunday, January 8, 2012, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Valley United Methodist Church with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Bill was born September 18, 1923, in East St. Louis, IL, the son of William C. and Hazel K. (Bramagin) Landholt. Bill enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II. He married Josephine K. Elwood (Jo) on June 18, 1944 in Cresco, Iowa. After the war they lived in Elma, Iowa where Bill and his brother-in-law, Fred Elwood, owned a hardware store. Bill also did electrical and plumbing work for contractors. Later he worked at the People’s Saving Bank in Elma for several years then became Post Master. During the time he lived in Elma he served the community as mayor, was a volunteer fire fighter, then fire chief. He also served on the city council.
In 1962 he took a position at the Iowa Des Moines National Bank (Norwest). After 21 years he retired from Norwest as Senior Vice President in the Construction and Mortgage Lending Group. Bill was very active with the Iowa Mortgage Bankers Association and the Home Builders Association of Iowa. He also was very active with his church, Valley United Methodist in West Des Moines. He served on Methodist district boards and for a number of years served on the Montessori Children’s House board. Bill was an avid Iowa State supporter and fan, loved his black labs and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughters, Pat (Alan) McGee of Bettendorf, IA and Ginny (John) Viviano of Urbandale, IA; seven grandchildren, Katie McGee, Tom McGee, Laura Langdon, James (Jenny) Langdon, Lee Langdon, Jeff (Tammy) Viviano and Jamie (Heather) Viviano and four great-grandchildren, Josh Viviano, Sophia Viviano, Grace Viviano and Pearl Viviano. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Jo Landholt.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McLaren’s Chapel. Memorial contributions may be directed to Valley United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
