William “Bill” Joseph Spain, 65, passed away Monday, October 2, at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston, IA, after an extended illness. Bill was the youngest of seven children born to Simon “Cyril” Spain and Clara Corinne DeLancy. He was raised on a farm in Charlotte, IA and later moved to Clinton, IA, and graduated from Clinton High School. Bill and Jennifer McDonnell were married in Clinton in 1979 and were together for 27 years. After welcoming their son, Adam, they moved to Iowa City where Bill and Jennifer attended the University of Iowa. Following college, Bill relocated to the Quad Cities where he spent most of his adult life. Bill and Jennifer welcomed a daughter, Madeline, to the family 18 years after their son Adam was born.
During his lifetime Bill wore a number of hats professionally, including time as a pressman for The Clinton Herald, a Financial Advisor, and most recently a Family Services Counselor with Dignity Memorial. But, his passion in life was storytelling and humor. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, and Iowa Hawkeyes, live music, and spending time with his family.
Bill was an avid Parrot Head and attended a number of Jimmy Buffett concerts over the years. He also enjoyed performing music alongside his friends. Bill met his longtime companion, Linda Goff, while enjoying live music in the Quad Cities. Bill adored Linda, her children, and grandchildren, all of whom survive Bill.
Bill is survived by his son Adam (Erin) Spain of Waunakee, WI; and daughter Madeline (Derek) Clayton of Waukee, IA; and two grandchildren: Ailish and Declan Spain.
He is also survived in death by brothers W. Michael of DeKalb, IL; Thomas of Bradenton, FL; and sisters Patricia of San Jose, CA; Mary of Gainesville, FL; and Kathleen of Bradenton, FL. Bill was preceded in death by his sister Theresa in 1981, father in 1990, and his mother in 1994.
A memorial service is planned for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, at The Runge Mortuary & Crematory in Davenport, IA. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
