Luis M. Ribas, 60, of Provincetown, MA formerly of New Bedford, MA passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Cape Cod Hospital. He was the loving husband of 40 years to Maria Idalina (Borges) Ribas. Luis was born in Vila Praia De Ancora, Portugal and came to the U.S. in 1985 settling in New Bedford. He lived in New Bedford for 10 years before moving to Provincetown.
Luis was a commercial fisherman, having owned and captained his own vessel for many years. He was also very passionate about finding balance between the conservation of natural resources and keeping the fishing industry alive. For the past 12 years, Luis was the Provincetown Senior Assistance Harbor Master and used his expertise and knowledge in a variety of areas to not only surpass his duty requirements but also to assist anyone who asked him for help. He continued that sense of duty as a member of the volunteer Provincetown Fire Department, where he was the steward of Engine 190. Luis never considered the risks to himself when it came to saving the lives of others; which he bravely did many, many times. The courage and selflessness he displayed throughout his entire life will forever be remembered by so many who knew him. Luis was a devoted husband, an incredible father, universal friend and an outstanding human being.
He is predeceased by his father Jose de Ribas, brother Paulo Alexandre Ribas and is survived by his mother Cidalina (De Matos) Ribas of Portugal; his beloved wife Maria Idalina (Borges) Ribas; his adored children Bruno and Andreia of Provincetown; and his remaining 6 brothers and 4 sisters. Luis is also survived by many, many nieces and nephews.
