(Della Vecchia is her last name and not a middle name)
Born: Sept 16, 1959 in Brooklyn, NY
Married: October 18, 1986 at St. Martin of Tours in Amityville
Joanne was a truly wonderful person. She was the best wife to Michael for over 28 years and proudest mother to her two children (now young adults) Alyssa who at 23 has graduated from Cornell and is working at PwC & living in Manhattan and Michael Jr. who at 22 was awarded as a scholar athlete and is currently attending the University at North Florida. Joanne devoted her life to her husband, children and family and was very happy doing so.
Joanne had a very special bond with each of her sisters and brothers. She was a wonderful person who was loved and was a special part of her extended family through marriage. She was always “a favorite aunt” to her many nieces & nephews, a special friend to some and a dear friend to so many others. She was very generous with her time and caring for people when they needed her. Joanne had a very contagious laugh that would make things brighter and was always very thoughtful, intuitive, sensitive and compassionate. She loved fashion (and shopping for it), chocolate, coffee, NYC, Broadway and traveling. Joanne was a very beautiful person and as best sang by the Bee Gees, she was “More Than a Woman”. Her time here was too short but she will be remembered by all of us here and by so many others with whom were blessed by knowing her.
Joanne grew up very happy with a wonderful family and friends on Powell Court in North Babylon and graduated from North Babylon High School with honors in 1977. She then went to college at the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising and developed her friendship with Marjorie and graduated in 1979 with an Associate’s Degree in Merchandising and Fashion Design. Joanne lived in NYC on Madison Avenue with her sisters Mary and Catherine and worked and traveled for the fashion industry. That all changed when her friend Sherri introduced her brother Michael to Joanne on a hopeful blind date which developed into their wonderful marriage. They started their family back in North Babylon and Joanne developed her friendship with Linda. Michael and Joanne moved to Dix Hills and raised their wonderful family together. Joanne has always loved Fashion and Retail and was everyone’s personal shopper. So when both her children were in College she went back to work on a part time basis. Most recently she worked at Lord & Taylor, Banana Republic and the Loft. Joanne was always happiest when having people over in “her kitchen” with everything perfect & delicious and everyone relaxed & enjoying themselves. She could always be counted on for the best cookies, chocolate birthday cakes and the most thoughtful gifts.
Joanne was recently in the process of building her new home with Michael in Jacksonville, FL and their “empty nest” home had to be bigger than before since her kitchen and dining room were to be special, there had to be a piano room for Alyssa, a separate game room for Michael Jr. and the guest room with bath for all of you to visit.
