12/1/18 - 6/24/14
And the Lord God said, "I need the finest, compassionate, and most organized nurse to care for my people." And on June 24, 2014 he chose Dorothy Seldin Schuman. Dorothy was born on a farm in Hurleyville, New York to Sam and Frances Seldin. After her one room schoolhouse and high school years, she attended Cumberland Hospital Nursing School. Her family owned the Hurleyville Hotel in the Catskill Mountains. She left the Catskills at 16 and put herself through four years of nursing school at Belleview Hospital. In July 1941 she met Sidney Schuman, the piano player in the hotel lobby. They married on August 7, 1942 prior to his deployment to Morrison Field, in what is now the Palm Beach International Airport.
Dorothy worked at Good Samaritan Hospital until 1946. In 1946 they relocated to the Bronx where their children were born. In 1953 they returned to West Palm Beach where Dorothy worked at various doctors' offices until the 1980's. Dorothy was an active member of the community and walked the streets of West Palm Beach collecting donations for the March of Dimes and the Leukemia Society. After moving to WPB Century Village, Dorothy patrolled in the COPS car, worked in the UCO office, and issued the old bar codes for residents’ automobiles.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Sidney, in January 2011. She is survived by her sons Jonathan David (Linda) Schuman and Sanford Schuman. She is also survived by four step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren.
A very special thank you from the family to Darcy Hall and Hospice of Palm Beach County, who made Dorothy's last days peaceful and dignified. We are grateful for your dedication and love. Please offer condolences at www.quattlebaum-fh.com
