Manfred was born on September 1, 1937 to Xavier and Therese Bung in Dormettingen, Germany in the Black Forest. While in high school he began his apprenticeship as a piano maker. After graduation, he apprenticed with Scheidmeyer, Souter, Jehle, and Pfeiffer piano makers before joining Steinway and Sons in New York. He managed the upright piano division at Steinway before deciding to start his own business.
Manfred served in the NATO forces for two years as a paratrooper.
In 1961 Manfred came to the United States as a Journeyman Piano Maker. He sang in the Liederkranz Singing Society of Long Island where he met his wife Gertrude (Trudy). He became a US citizen in 1969 in a ceremony on Long Island.
In 1972 the family moved to Lake Worth where Manfred started Fred’s Piano Service. For 43 years Fred serviced and restored pianos in the Palm Beach area. He was active in the local music scene and Piano Technicians Guild. Fred loved meeting his customers and helping them achieve their musical aspirations. In addition to tuning and repairing pianos he rebuilt many pianos and advised customers in choosing instruments. As a musician Fred played trumpet and sang tenor in various choirs.
