Born May 2, 1931, in Nelson, BC, Betty was the eldest child of May and Layton Miles. She attended the VGH School of Nursing, graduating in 1953 at the age of 22. Betty nursed for many years at the VGH Heather Pavilion, she later became a founding member of the Heather Heritage Society, advocating to preserve, restore and protect the Heather Pavilion. She also had the opportunity to return to nursing at Lions Gate Hospital in 1975, retiring as a nursing supervisor in 1995.
In October 1954, Betty married her love and partner, David John Kirkwood, who predeceased her in August 2005. She missed him deeply.
Betty was an active member of her community, contributing her time and talents to numerous clubs and boards, including the Truce Club, La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, the Heather Heritage Society, and the RNABC.
She loved to play Bridge and knit and had a vast knowledge and deep appreciation for art, music, and wine. She also enjoyed an occasional Jameson’s Irish Whiskey. An avid reader,
lifelong learner and enthusiastic traveler, Betty found joy in many places, especially during
treasured times spent in Whistler and at Napili Kai.
Above all, Betty held a fierce and unwavering love for her family and friends. She especially treasured time with her six grandchildren - building memories with them, and sharing her values of integrity, compassion, grace, and courage.
Betty was a gem of a person who appreciated all that life offered. How fortunate we are to have loved someone that makes saying goodbye so profoundly difficult. Celebrate the gifts she shared, love fiercely, and remember Betty whenever “it’s a jewel of a day.”
She is lovingly remembered by her children: Miles (Marie) Kirkwood, Barbara (Brian) Stickle, Karen (Darren) Freeman, grandchildren; Dalton (Kelli) Stickle, Sarah (Nick) Kirkwood,
Jackson (Devon) Kirkwood, Jameson (Jackie) Stickle, Jordan (Jordan) Freeman, Connor (Kenedi) Freeman.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Venvi Hollyburn House for their care and kindness.
A private celebration of life will be held in May 2026.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heather Heritage Society
