Jim was born in Alert Bay, B.C. and grew up in the small, Finnish fishing community of Sointula, B.C. on Malcolm Island.
Jim was independent and resourceful. When he was 7 years old, he and his friend regularly rowed to a nearby island to camp for 2-3 nights without adult supervision. The boys hunted and cooked their own food.
As long as Jim could remember, he loved working on fish boats. He left school in grade 9 to fish full-time. Jim was a natural. He became Skipper of the Broughton 1 and later the Alisa. He worked hard but always had a great sense of humour.
Jim met his wife Maureen in Sointula. Maureen was the new school teacher in town and Jim kept asking her to take a ride in his car. When she finally accepted, she succumbed to Jim’s charm and they were married within a few weeks. Jim and Maureen had a daughter, Lisa and a son, Alan. Jim was a devoted, fun-loving, hands-on Dad. The family moved to North Vancouver in 1974 where they stayed.
Jim retired from fishing in his 50’s but he often said he retired too early-- he loved fishing. Although he enjoyed retirement to the fullest too.
Jim and Maureen travelled the world on cruise ships, including 3 world cruises. They visited 176 different countries and went on so many cruises that crew members and fellow travellers recognized them and became dear friends.
Jim adored his three grandson. He loved spending time with them, sharing stories, cooking their favourite things and cheering them on in everything they did. He was a loving and fun grandpa.
Jim's favourite team was the Bluejays. He was thrilled to see them knock out the Yankees this year.
Jim leaves behind his daughter Lisa Hamilton (Zoran), his grandsons, Keenan (Michaela), Spencer (Tayla) and Alex (Karissa) and other beloved family and friends. He is predeceased by his wife Maureen and his son Alan and other dear relatives.
