We sadly announce the death of our beloved maman, mehmeh (grandmother), and mehmas (great-grandmother), Poorandokht Darabian, on March 28, 2024. Pooran is survived by her daughter Hida, her son, Hooman (Nazanin), her grandchildren Kaveh, Nahal (Cliff), Nicole (Richard), and Arman, and great-grandchildren Shyon and Jhiyon; sister Mehri, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband Esfandiar Darabian, and her daughter Azita Darabian.
Pooran was born in Tehran, Iran into a Zoroastrian-Iranian family in 1930. She finished high school and married her husband, Esfandiar Darabian, M.D. in 1953. They lived in Southwestern Iran for ten years, before returning to Tehran. After Esfandiar’s retirement, they immigrated to Canada in 1981.
The loss of her husband in 1982 was a shock to her and the family, but she held everyone together with strength and love. She adored her grandchildren and cherished every moment of her life with them. Losing her youngest child, Azita, to cancer in 2014, was a tragedy which she endured with grace.
Pooran was a strong believer in education and independence for her children. She took pride in seeing all her grandchildren graduating with university degrees. She loved beauty and excelled in arts. She was a gifted dressmaker and created many beautiful knitted pieces for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Pooran was elegant, kind, thoughtful and loyal. Family and friends were important to her.
We will miss her.
Her burial is private according to her wishes. Her celebration of life (Porseh) will be held on Sunday, April 14, from 2 to 4 pm at Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier in North Vancouver. We are grateful to Drs. Moira Cormack and Ken Cunningham who took care of her for more than 30 years. We would also like to thank Dr. Sebba and Inglewood Care staff.
