March 29, 1933 – November 30, 2024
Predeceased by parents Erwin and Hazel; siblings Hazel (Loudon), Beryl (Millward), and Howard; three dogs, two cats, and a crow named Jim. Survived by sister Di-Anna (Pike), wife Marillyn, daughter Pamela (Mansveld), sons Michael and Paul, and grandchildren Kristina, Olivia, Paige, and Eric.
Born into a hardscrabble life in 1930s dust-bowl Saskatchewan, "Opa" was the third of five children in a nomadic family. He took on many humble jobs - packing fruit, killing chickens (his father once quipped, “you can quit anytime, son”), and resetting bowling pins (once getting knocked out by a flying missile) - to support the family. Despite moving frequently, he excelled academically, graduating as Armstrong, BC High School valedictorian in 1951 before earning a medical degree from UBC in 1958—despite classmate shenanigans and the ultimate distraction: a beautiful young Arts & Education student, Marillyn, whom he married that year "because he'd fail his exams if we didn't settle down."
After residing briefly in Vancouver’s West End, the Bennetts moved to Chilliwack, BC where Dick served as a military medical officer and Marillyn taught school before the stork brought Pamela in 1960. In 1961, they moved to Germany, welcoming baby Michael while building lifelong friendships. Back in Canada (Toronto, 1963), the stork arrived one last time with Paul, while Dick completed his medical residency. In 1964, the young family piled into an old station wagon and drove cross-country to West Vancouver, purchasing their first home, on a double lot, for a whopping $18,000.
Dr. Bennett practiced family medicine for 30 years, partially retiring in 1995. He embraced life fully with Marillyn and family — skiing, jogging, hiking, backpacking, gardening, and beekeeping. A beloved physician and friend, he was often greeted by grateful patients while strolling the Seawall.
A Celebration of Life will be held at West Vancouver United Church on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 1:00 pm (RSVPs appreciated: [email protected]). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
