Betty Jo leaves behind her Husband Gary McCollum; Children Bob (Monica) McCollum, Robin (Sean) Johnson, Chris (Lilly) McCollum; Grandchildren Matthew McCollum, Jennifer (Vince) Costa, Shane (Kelley) Johnson, Devyn Johnson, Melissa McCollum, and Ryan McCollum; and Great-Grandson Evan Costa.
Betty Jo was a patriot through and through. She was proud of the accomplishments of her father George Chamlee who served as an Army Ranger and prisoner of war during World War II. George, along with his many other achievements, received two Bronze stars for his heroics and participation overseas. Betty Jo carried his bronze star as a memory of him and believed it added a protective presence over her family. Her pride for father and country carried into her home. You would not find a home more organized or clean. She raised three wonderful children and instilled in them the same pride for home and country.
Betty’s teen years were during the 50’s and 60’s. A time when music was changing the world forever. Betty loved to dance and won the city dance competition at the age of fifteen. She followed music and current genera’s until her passing and always described, Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion, as her favorite song as it truly describes the contents of hers and Gary’s relationship.
Her happiest time was when Gary was playing with his band. The band would rehearse in their garage and she would follow Gary to each gig and venue. These nights are where Betty looked her finest. She would devote the afternoon to making sure that everything in her wardrobe and every single strand of hair was in place. She wanted to look her best to show off for her husband and friends. She would spend hours picking out the perfect pieces of jewelry that Gary had given her and wear it eloquently. Her children often joked that if Betty would wear every piece of jewelry that Gary had given her, she would not be able to stand up.
Betty will always be remembered; to her friends as stubborn and fun. To her husband, the love of his life and the reason that he has the blessings of children and grandchildren. To her children Betty will always be mom, the presence at home and the firm hand of the family.
