He was born on Feb 19, 1932 in Allenstein (Ostpreussen) Germany, the son of Bernhard and Hedwig Funk.
Prior to entering the USA in Nov of 1956, he was an officer with the police dept in West Berlin, Germany. Al joined the Ventura Co Sheriff Dept in May of 1965 and served as a Deputy Sheriff with the dept until his retirement in 1984.
He enjoyed sailing and boat racing. He was a member of the Annacapa Yacht Club. He also served as Rear Commodore of the former Islander Yacht Club. He also enjoyed motorcycle riding and was an avid reader.
During that time he received several commendations and also was awarded the Certificate of Valor by Attorney General Evelle Younger in Feb of 1978.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons Al (Cheryl) of San Marcos, CA, Eric of Oceanside CA, and Mike of Illinois; two stepchildren Frank Fulton (Grace) of Sioux City, Iowa, Shelly Peterson (Bill) of South Sioux City , Nebraska; 13 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren.
Services will be held at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Mortuary at 5600 Lindero Canyon Rd in Westlake Village on Thursday, December 1 at 1pm in the Chapel.
A reception will follow at Vallecito Estates, 1251 Old Conejo Road, Newbury Park, California.
