Edward J. Purcell, Jr., of Moorpark, California, passed away on March 2, 2026, from complications of COPD, CHF, and CKD. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of Edward J. Purcell and Kathleen (Kelly) Purcell. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Elayne L. (Beck) Purcell. He is survived by his daughter, Meredith K. Sewell, and son in law, Andrew Sewell, of Mission Viejo, California.
Ed grew up in Warwick and graduated from Pilgrim High School before enlisting in the United States Army. He served for three years during the Vietnam era, stationed in Korea as an information specialist and technical writer—roles that reflected his natural curiosity, clarity of thought, and gift for communication.
After returning home, Ed explored opportunities in radio and television. His life took its most meaningful turn when he met Elayne at Emblem & Badge in Providence. Their partnership helped them as they moved across the US seeking new opportunities, marked by humor, a sense of fun, and love. Ed went on to build a successful career in sales and rose to executive leadership in the giftware industry, contributing his insight and energy to companies including Gorham, Maruri USA, Marty Bell, and Possible Dreams.
To his family and friends, Ed was the person who always showed up—ready with a joke, a helping hand, or a bandage for whatever life had scraped. He listened fully, offered comfort freely, and gave advice with equal parts honesty, humor, and heart. Over the years, several dogs chose him as their “person,” drawn to his gentle nature and, perhaps, his generous supply of treats. Whether or not they understood his humor, they understood his kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the COPD Foundation or the American Lung Association, organizations dedicated to supporting individuals living with lung disease.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 12, at 10:00 a.m. at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks in Westlake Village, California.
