Eugene Douglas Pickering of Woodland Hills, California passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at the age of 94. He was born on June 27, 1929 in Lincoln, Nebraska. At the age of 7 his family moved to Los Angeles, California where he lived until entering the military.
Gene proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, from 1946 until he was honorably discharged in 1949. During one leave from the military, a chance meeting at an ice cream truck with a young woman would forever change his life. Joy Chappel would become his lifelong love and they were married on October 8, 1949 and enjoyed 74 wonderful years together.
He worked as a General Contractor for more than 40 years. He built his business with hard work, attention to detail, fairness, and loyalty to his customers.
Gene was actively involved in fitness and health, running marathons and bicycling. He successfully climbed the summit of Mount Whitney and took first place in his age group at the Leatherneck Marathon. He enjoyed camping with his family, hiking and fishing together, as well as numerous trips with his extended family along the Oregon Coast and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
Eugene was preceded in death by his Father, Avery B. Pickering, Mother, Florine Pickering, Siblings, Beth Edmon, Avery R. Pickering, Adele Chenoweth, and Leslie Berry.
He is survived by his Loving Wife Esther Joy Pickering, Children, Cheryl DeLorenzo, James Pickering, Cynthia Kendall, Patricia Penny, and Christine Jude; Grandchildren, Angelo DeLorenzo, Leslie Miller, Robert Pickering, Michael Kendall, BreAnne Stuthers, Timothy McClive, Daniel McClive, Kenneth McClive, Travis Jude, Amy Shillig, Eric Jude, and 23 Great Grandchildren.
Gene is known to be a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle. He will be sorely missed by all and forever in our hearts.
The family would like to thank Affinity Healthcare Resources and Ivy Park at Wood Ranch for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in his final days.
Private viewing and graveside burial service will be held at Pierce Brothers Dignity Oaks on July 9, 2024.
