

Olive Gertrude Determan, 102, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2014 in her home in Valencia, California. She was born on July 12, 1912 in a farmhouse in Ethan, South Dakota to David Victor Lovinger and Minnie Dorothea Christiansen-Lovinger. After growing up on "The Farm,” she married Alred John Determan (1906-1998) at age 19 in 1931; they were married 67 years. During their marriage, they lived in Mitchell, South Dakota and briefly in Chicago, Illinois before settling in Southern California where they lived in Los Angeles, Inglewood, Granada Hills and finally for 35 years in Newbury Park. In 2006, she, along with her sister, Louise Kathryn Lovinger (1906-2008), moved to individual apartments at a senior’s complex in Valencia. Olive was also preceded in death by her sister, Eunice Marian Lovinger (1907-1940), and her brother, Leonard Martin Lovinger (1911-2007). Olive had a long and happy life; she enjoyed poetry, reading, cooking, gardening, sewing, playing cards and lots of traveling and fishing trips. Olive welcomed visitors, always ready to fix them a sandwich and pour them a cup of coffee. Above all, Olive cherished her family. She was the loving matriarch of a large family and is survived by her three children: John David Determan (Gloria), Dorothy Carol Thompson (Robert), Kenneth Clark Determan (MaryAnn); seven grandchildren: Cynthia Heeb (Ronald), James Determan, Carole Winch (George), Stephen Cady (Zulfiya), Mark Determan, Victoria Horne, and Diane Chartier; three great-grandchildren: Christopher Horne, Alyssa Heeb, and Laura Cady; and one great-great-grandchild, Colton Horne. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
