Hawthorne, California, passed away on November 3, 2024, at the age of 85. Born in Texas on
June 29, 1939, Pablo’s journey in life was one of dedication to his family, career, and the city he
called home, Hawthorne.
Pablo and his high school sweetheart moved to California in 1954, where they started their
family and dreams. Together, they raised three children, two daughters and a son who tragically
passed away in 1985. He also took immense joy in his four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren,
whom he adored.
Professionally, Pablo worked as a machinist at Rockwell International, where he made a lasting
impact by contributing to the development of the escape hatch on the Apollo 11 spacecraft that
famously landed on the moon. His time at Rockwell also ignited his passion for city politics,
fueled by his active role in the union. This interest led him to serve his community in numerous
ways, including working with local politicians and organizations.
Pablo made history as the first Latino council member of Hawthorne, California, and eventually
became mayor pro tempore. His leadership and vision were key in the construction of the Beach
Boys monument in the city. He was deeply involved in civic and community affairs, serving on
the board of BHS since 1974 and participating in local organizations such as the Moose Lodge,
Lions Club, and Eagles Lodge.
Throughout his career, Pablo received countless awards for his unwavering commitment to his
community. He championed causes close to his heart, including marching with Cesar Chavez in
support of farmworkers' rights and traveling across the United States to support various
initiatives. A proud Democrat, Pablo had the honor of participating in a motorcade during
President Bill Clinton’s visit to California.
Reflecting Helen Keller’s words, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen
nor even touched, but just felt in the heart.” Pablo’s legacy of service, dedication, and love for
his community will live on for all those who knew him. He leaves behind a profound impact on
the city of Hawthorne, where his contributions will be remembered for generations to come. His
memory and love for his family will continue to live on in our hearts.
A funeral service for Pablo will be held Friday, December 6, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks-Griffin Memorial Park, Mortuary & Crematory, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village, CA 91362.
