William Robert Dinino of Westlake Village, CA passed away due to colon cancer on July 7, 2020. Born in Pennsylvania, Bill was an ‘army brat’ who grew up in Italy, Germany and the USA. He graduated from Cal State Fullerton, became a CPA, and worked with Unocal and Coopers & Lybrand before becoming the CFO of Malibu Grand Prix Corporation. For the past 25 years, he enjoyed a career in business management and real estate investing. Bill put family first, working part time so he could volunteer in the classroom; homeschool for three years; enjoy basketball, camping, fishing, hiking and travel with his kids; coach travel teams, and manage his best team—his wife, Karen, and children, Grayson, Emily and Brent.
In his 60 years of life, Bill brightened, changed and improved the lives of so many in our community. As a soccer, basketball and softball coach, he was an intuitive team builder who helped players trust and develop their unique skills. Bill coached with kindness, generosity, and, most of all, humor. He had a magical ability to teach math and volunteered in schools for years. Bill’s car buying skills were legendary — he was a master negotiator who taught family and friends how to make a deal. Bill knew the healing power of nature and was dedicated to preserving and creating hiking trails. He loved hiking with family, friends and local Sierra Club hiking groups. He was passionate about volunteering with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council (SMMTC). With love and support from his family, friends, and hiking and trail work family, Bill beat cancer by living his life purposefully, meaningfully and courageously. He showed us all how to forge a trail through the valleys and, especially, over the hills.
Bill’s greatest joy was being with Grayson and his wife, Keri; Emily and her fiancé, Joel Jones, and Brent. Bill was ecstatic to be a grandfather, loving every minute as PopPop to Grayson and Keri’s son, Bryce William Dinino. Married for 26 years, Bill and Karen still held hands while binging Netflix, offered each other the last bite of cake, and were deeply in love. Bill was surrounded by a much-loved family: his mother, Brigitta Weuve; sisters, Robin Dinino and Diane Mason; brothers and sisters in law; nieces and nephew, and a large, supportive network of cousins, aunts and uncles.
Bill was happiest when hearing his family fill a room with laughter. Though our hearts are broken and we miss you with each breath we take, we promise you will still hear our laughter.
Those who miss Bill will feel his presence in the Santa Monica Mountains he loved and on the adopted trail he helped build: the Wishbone Trail, located behind the baseball fields at the Yarrow YMCA in Westlake Village. Bill would tell you to watch out for the muddy part by the trailhead sign. Bill has been honored by donations to the SMMTC, Sierra Club, Cancer Society and City of Hope.
