Carl Von Tobel, III

Carl Von Tobel, III, age 77, of Matamoras, PA, formerly of Paramus, NJ, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025.

Carl was the beloved husband of Rosemary (nee Desmond) and lived the majority of his life in Bergen County, NJ. He was born and raised in Dumont, NJ. He graduated from Dumont High School, Athens College (AL) with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s degree from William Paterson University. Carl returned to his alma mater and worked for the Dumont Public School System for over 30 years as a physical education teacher, coach and athletic director. He impacted the lives of students all over Bergen County as a beloved mentor and coach for the high schools in Tenafly, Emerson, Wallington and Dumont where he coached football, track and field, basketball and baseball.

In retirement, Carl continued to lead a fulfilling life as the coach of the Rivers Edge exercise group and was a proud member of the Links Golf Club. Carl’s ability to maintain an active lifestyle was supported by the exceptional medical care and friendship he received from Dr. Peter Scivoletti. Carl was the beloved husband of Rosemary for over 50 years. He was the adored father of Theresa (Kevin) McGrath, Carl (Kimberly) Von Tobel, Erin (Brian) Gessner. He was the revered Pop Pop to Caroline, Catie & Jack McGrath, Desmond & Joseph Von Tobel, Aidan & Abigail Gessner. Pop will be missed deeply every day by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael McGrath. Friends are invited to visit the family at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ, on Sunday, February 16, from 1-5 pm. A service will be held in Carl’s honor on Monday, February 17, at 11 am at Becker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will immediately follow at Biagio’s Ristorante, 299 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ.
