Growney, Gerald R. (Jerry), 83, of Old Tappan, NJ, formerly of Englewood, NJ, passed away on February 28, 2022. Jerry graduated from Dwight Morrow High School (as a self-proclaimed "answer to a teenage prayer") and attended the Newark College of Engineering before pursuing a lifelong career as a construction surveyor in the New York City metropolitan area. Jerry was a proud charter member of the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 15D. He was extremely hardworking and was proud of his modest beginnings — from hitchhiking barefoot across NJ to becoming the provider his family knew and loved.
He was an avid golfer, world traveler, coin collector and Bombay martini lover (with a good shake), but he was most known for his unique sense of humor and one-of-a-kind personality. Jerry was extremely humble and often gave back to those in need. His devotion to his loving family was like no other. He always said that family comes first, and he would prove this time and time again. Nothing made him happier than being surrounded by his family and grandchildren, whom he loved spending time with, as well as the family's dog, Sandy.
Jerry, son of the late Antoinette and Gerald R. Growney Sr., is survived by his beloved wife Karen, their children Pamela, Jennifer and her husband Charles, Alice and her fiancé Michael, Jerry and his partner Matt, his youngest daughter, Elizabeth and his son-in-law Bobby; as well their grandchildren, Derek, Zach, Brooke and Kaleigh and his siblings Neil, Mark, Denis, Eva, and Joanne.
Pop-pop — as his grandchildren called him — has been reunited with his youngest grandson, Nathan.
A Visitation will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022, from 3-7PM at Becker Funeral Home at 219 Kinderkamack Rd. Westwood, NJ 07675.
