Laszlo Oroszlany, 89, left this world peacefully on September 29, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. In recent years he lived in Milford, PA and was previously a long-time resident of Washington Township, NJ.
Laszlo was born on August 2, 1936 in Dombegyhaz, Hungary, the son of Antal Oroszlany and Katalin Frank. He was raised amid the significant trials and hardships of WWII and subsequent post-war Communist regime in Hungary. As a young man he moved up to Budapest and was, with his brother Antal, caught up in the Hungarian Revolution of October 1956. The two brothers had to flee Hungary immediately after the Russian occupation of Budapest following the Revolution, crossing at great peril over the border into Austria, then to Italy, where they were graciously received into temporary camps along with thousands of other Hungarian refugees. They were eventually able to come to the United States, arriving in New York in early 1959.
The two brothers settled in New York, building their lives here: Laszlo met his first wife, Katalin (Kathleen) Alfoldi and married in 1965. They had two children: daughter Erica, and son Stephen. He moved his family from New York City to Washington Township, NJ in 1975.
Laszlo had studied Mechanical Engineering in Budapest, and while settling into his new life in America, continued his education here with night classes at City College, NYC. He started his own business, Apollo Machine Shop in 1966, manufacturing precision specialty parts for the commercial and military aircraft industry. One of his proudest achievements was creating parts used in electronic equipment for the NASA space program, that were sent to - and still remain on - the moon. He continued to operate his business until retiring in his mid-70s.
In December 1997 his beloved wife Kathleen passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. Widowed at the age of 61, Laszlo focused on his family, work, travel, and parish activities, continuing to travel back and forth to his native Hungary when possible. It was there that he re-connected, after 50 years, with a cherished childhood friend, Anna (nee Turi), also widowed at the time. They were married in July 2001 in Passaic, New Jersey, and continued to live in Twp. of Washington until his retirement, when they moved to Milford, Pennsylvania, settling there.
A devout Catholic, he was a very active participant in lay Church activities, particularly at St. Stephen of Hungary RC parish of New York City, as well as in his recent, post-retirement years with the small Hungarian community at Immaculate Conception parish in Port Jervis, NY. His children were raised with a Catholic upbringing, and an understanding and appreciation of their Hungarian heritage including language, history, and culture.
Laszlo is survived by his wife Anna, daughter Erica & her husband Erling Julinusson, son Stephen & his wife Kristen Oroszlany (Shuptar), and his granddaughters Kaitlin Oroszlany (17) and Lauren Oroszlany (13). He is also survived by sisters-in-law Norah Oroszlany (Murphy), Klara Oroszlany (Jakab), and Anna Bikkal (Bezdek), and brother-in-law Kalman Bezdek, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins both here and overseas. He is predeceased by his wife Katalin (Kathleen) and siblings Margit Oroszlany Turi, Antal Oroszlany, Katalin Oroszlany Frey, and Lajos Oroszlany.
Memorial visitation will be held this Thursday, October 2nd at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Rd, Westwood NJ, between 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Funeral Mass will be held 11am on Friday, October 3rd, at Our Lady of Good Counsel RC Church, 668 Ridgewood Rd, Washington Township, NJ 07675. Private burial to take place at a later date.
