Ruth graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and continued her studies at the Syracuse Graduate School of Education.
She spent many years sharing her creativity as an art teacher and instructor.
Before relocating to Asheville, Ruth was a long-time resident of Cresskill, New Jersey, where she built a life as a devoted mother, friend, and tireless volunteer.
Ruth was extraordinarily generous with her time and knowledge. Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to serving her community, in organizations such as the Girl Scouts, the Cresskill Library, the YWCA of Hackensack, the Health and Welfare Council, NJ Youth and Family Services, the Bergen County Jail Annex Training Program, and the Art Center of Northern New Jersey, among many others.
Those who knew Ruth will remember her for her quick wit, sharp mind, and straightforward nature. She was crafty, artistic and an exceptional cook.
She loved to travel, enjoyed birds and nature, and was an avid reader.
In addition to her volunteer work, Ruth also successfully ran her own direct mailing business for many years.
Ruth was the daughter of the late Ralph E. Johnson and Beatrice Johnson. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard B. Miller, and her aunt, Marion E. Johnson.
She is survived by her beloved partner, Esther H. Nevarez; her sister, Lois Price; and her four children: Brad R. Miller (Mari Fujiwara), Katherine L. Miller (Mark Nixdorf), Vance J. Miller (Kelli Rossi), and Margaret "Maggie" E. Pedziwiatr (Michael "Peter" Pedziwiatr). She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Richard Timur Miller, Liam J. Miller, and Lauren E. Miller; her nieces, Cathi Walker and Bonnie Cothren, and their families.
A small graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack, New York, on April 1 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth's memory to the Girl Scouts of Bergen County, NJ, or The Art Center of Northern New Jersey.
