

Carmelo Failla, 95, of Bristol, RI formerly of Hartford and West Hartford, CT, beloved husband of the late Rosalie J. (DiDomenico) Failla, passed away peacefully Friday, June 30, 2017 in Riverside, RI. He was born January 4, 1922 in Floridia, prov. of Siracusa, Italy, the eldest son of the late Carmelo and Josephine Failla. Carmelo grew up in Floridia and served in the Italian Army during World War II. He also lived and worked in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Canada before immigrating to the United States in 1954 and becoming a naturalized citizen in 1958. Carmelo met and married Rosalie in 1954, settling in Hartford where they began raising their family, eventually moving to West Hartford. Carmelo was a welder and sheet metal worker. He retired from General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton where he worked on the U.S. Navy Trident submarines. He was a long time communicant of St. Mark the Evangelist Church in West Hartford. Carmelo enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, especially his prized tomatoes and fruit trees. A man who always liked to keep busy working with his hands, he utilized his talents as an ironworker and carpenter at home. As much as he worked, Carmelo enjoyed his time with his friends at the Italian American Stars Club of Hartford and later on Federal Hill in Providence, RI. Most of all, Carmelo loved to be with his family. A devoted father, grandfather and friend, he will be sadly missed by his four daughters, Josephine Cunha and her husband James of Barrington, RI, Concetta Lamore of Summit, NJ, Elizabeth Halladay and her husband Richard of Barrington, RI, and Rosalie Saville and her husband Wayne of Crystal Lake, IL. He leaves his cherished grandchildren, Katherine and Raymond Lamore, Brendan and Andrew Cunha, Christopher and Patrick Halladay and Emma and Danny Saville. He also leaves his sisters, Sebastiana Pirruccio of Melbourne, Australia and Maria DiCarlo of Floridia, Italy and many nieces, nephews and extended family members. In addition to his beloved Rosalie, Carmelo was predeceased by his brother Salvatore Failla. Funeral services will leave on Saturday July 8, 2017 at 9 a.m. from the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 467 S. Quaker Lane, West Hartford. Burial will immediately follow at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Carmelo’s family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
