Concetta (Capodicasa) Motta, 87 of Hartford, beloved wife to the late Salvatore Motta, peacefully passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021 at home. Concetta was born March 2, 1934 and raised in Canicattini Bagni, Province of Siracusa, Sicily, daughter to the late Saverio and Antonina (Latina) Capodicasa. Concetta, Salvatore and their children partially resided in Venezuela during the ‘50s and ‘60s; from there, they immigrated to America May 24, 1970, making Hartford their home.

Concetta’s greatest joy in life was caring for and spending time with her family. She loved cooking, sewing (was the family tailor) and listening to romantic Italian and Spanish music, as well as caring for her beautiful roses that adorned the side of her house. In addition, she was a member of the Canicattini Society in Hartford.

An adored Mamma and Nonna who will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her loving family, Concetta leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Nilla Motta of Rocky Hill; a daughter and son-in-law, Antonieta “Nina” and Antonino Garofalo of Newington; daughter-in-law, Josephine Motta of Berlin; seven grandchildren, Sal B. Motta, Salvatore J. Motta, Steven R. Motta, Kevin M. Motta, Kristopher R. Motta, Vanessa DuBois and Salvatore Garofalo; as well as seven cherished great-grandchildren, Ava, Charlotte, Jackson, Lorelei, Jameson, Nathaniel, and Hudson Motta. In addition to her husband and parents, Concetta was pre-deceased by a son, Santo Motta and two sisters, Rosina Martinez and Maria Calleri.

Friends and relatives may pay their respects to the Motta family Friday, July 9, from 9-11 a.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd, Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. in St. Lawrence O’Toole Church of Maria de la Paz Parish, 494 New Britain Ave., Hartford. Interment will follow the Mass in Cedar Hill Cemetery (Section 30), Hartford. Nina and Joe,

Sending you prayers and my heartfelt condolences to you and your families during this time of sorrow. Mrs. Motta was an amazing woman and she will truly be missed.

I met Mrs. Motta when I was 16 years old (I had immigrated to the USA, just 6 years earlier) and was hired for my first part-time job as a cashier at Finast Grocery store. Your Mom was working in produce with Mrs. Sciarra, who introduced me to your Mom, and your Mom greeted me with that beautiful smile of hers that would light up a whole room. And the next thing you know, we struck up a conversation about the ‘best cucumbers’ in the produce department—thank God the conversation was in Italian or else we would both have been fired on the spot; and from that day on we were bosom buddies and partners in crime. Me the young and zany one and Mrs. Motta the ‘older version’.

I will always remember the good times Mrs. Motta and I spent together working at the Finast grocery store; telling stories and jokes in the employee ‘lounge’ aka break room, as we use to call it, pulling pranks on our colleagues and at times on the actual customers. Such beautiful, fun, and happy memories that will be etched in my mind and heart for the rest of my life.

To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors that God grants upon us. A mother is with us always, first in her lifetime, then forever in our memory.
