

Eugene ”Smitty” Fox Smith, Sr., 83, of Hartford, husband of almost 54 years of the late Marie (Morin) Smith, died Saturday (October 27, 2012) at Avery Heights in Hartford. Born and raised in Hartford, the city he loved and always spoke about, Smitty was the son of the late Thomas Francis and Catherine Fox Smith. He was employed as the sexton at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, 1951 to 1953. Some of his fondest memories were of his growing up, and spending time with his family at “the cottage” at Point O’ Woods in Old Lyme. Smitty also was a member of the Moose Lodge in Hartford. He is survived by his children: Patty and Ken Johnson of Wethersfield, Eugene F. Smith Jr. of Windsor Locks, Mary and Greg Ethier of Columbia, Billy Smith of West Hartford, Linda Smith of West Hartford, John and Lynne Liston Smith of Tolland and James Smith of Newington; grandchildren, Michelle Byers, Kelly Johnson, Eugene F. Smith, III, Joshua Ethier, Joel Ethier, Nathan Ethier, Shane Smith, Jordan Smith, Shauna Keenan Pinkham, Brenna Keenan, Alex Keenan and Evan Smith; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Jayden, Landon, Adriana, Jacob, Rylee, Kenzie and Angel. He is also survived by his dear brothers-in-law, Thomas and Lauretta Morin and Sonny and Earlene Morin, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Donald and Thomas; a granddaughter, Shauna; a grandson, Kenny; a great-granddaughter, Madelyn; a brother, Thomas and two sisters, Ursula Burke and Patricia Smith. A special thank you to all the staff at Avery Heights and Liz Kilroy and staff at the Betty Larus Adult Day Center for their excellent care of our Dad.
The funeral will leave Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, 285 Church Street, Hartford. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield with full military honors. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
