Greg Alan Kammerdeiner, 74, of Wethersfield, beloved husband of 48 years to Donna (Keener), passed away on December 29, 2025 at home, with his wife by his side. Greg was born in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania on August 31, 1951, and was the son of Charles Leroy Kammerdeiner and Sylvia Leah Wilcox.
Greg grew up in Natrona Heights, PA and graduated from Highlands High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree after studying at Grove City College.
He spent 51 years as a metallurgical engineer with Duquesne Light, later FirstEnergy, where his dedication and work ethic were deeply valued. Outside of work, Greg found his greatest joy outdoors.
A native Pennsylvanian at heart, Greg felt most at home in the woods, by the water, or gathered with family. He loved hunting and fishing and patiently taught his sons, Zachary and Jesse to hunt and fish, sharing years of those traditions with them.
Above all else, Greg cherished his family. Time spent with his children and grandchildren was his greatest happiness. A devoted Christian, Greg loved the Lord and lived his faith daily through kindness and gratitude for life’s blessings. He also enjoyed good music, especially the Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton and Allison Krauss.
Greg was a devoted, unselfish, kind, gentle, patient husband to Donna. There were years of hand holding everywhere they walked, morning coffee, cooking dinners together, enjoying extended family at their home often and as a couple opened their home for extended stays to many young people over the years. Together they made a home that was always welcoming and hospitable. He enjoyed being host and playing bar tender, making cocktails to suit what each person liked. He wanted those in his life to have what they needed when they needed it. He gave all he had to give.
While Greg loved the Steelers and Pirates, he was an avid Pittsburgh Penguins fan, loving them even before they became winners. The night Mario Lemieux played his first game, which Greg attended, was the beginning of an even more special passion for the Pens and hockey. Mario was his ultimate sports hero. His sons followed that love of hockey and a hockey family was born. In the beginning there were many mornings he was up at 3am, coffee in hand, warming up the car and carrying two little boys with their pillows for early morning practices and games. As they got older and played for the Amateur Pens, he spent nearly every weekend in the car traveling to Canada, New York, Ohio or wherever else they needed to go. He would do anything and everything for his boys. For this, his sons will be forever grateful. He was so proud of the men they have become.
Greg loved, adored, and treasured his grandchildren in his heart every single day. Every time he led Grace before dinner, he asked God to remind Mason how much we all love him. Greg and Donna spent many Saturdays with his granddaughters doing Bible study, ordering take-out dinners, baking cookies, letting them paint his nails and even put make-up on him when they wanted to. He spent hours playing in the pool with all his grandchildren and loved attending Olivia’s volleyball, Madeline’s soccer, Ayden’s basketball, and Owen’s baseball games. With his grandsons he put trains together, worked on Legos, read stories at bedtime, attended their school activities, and was teased from time to time for setting the microwave on fire while babysitting them one night. Pappy was the annual Family Christmas Bingo caller and the “Candy Shop” keeper. He was a grandfather that made himself available for whatever they wanted to do.
Greg loved his daughters-in-law as his own daughters. He and Ann shared their own book club of two, and he was so pleased that Heather always made it known he made the best margaritas.
In addition to his wife, Donna, Greg leaves behind two sons, Zachary Alan Kammerdeiner and his wife, Ann, and Jesse Alan Kammerdeiner and his wife, Heather. He also leaves four grandchildren, Olivia Harper, Madeline Avery, Ayden Alan, and Owen Alan. He is further survived by his sister, Cindy Latini, four brothers-in-law, Daniel (Debbie), Randy (Marybeth), Calvin (Wende), Richard “Dick”, two sisters-in-law, Marcia (Tim) and Paula (Keith); nephews Scott (Shannon), Rob (Sue), Fred (Janet), Jeff (Kelly), Michael; niece Jennifer (Brad): niece-in-law, Diane; and grand-dog Riley.
In addition to his parents, Greg was predeceased by his beloved grandson, Mason Alan Kammerdeiner, his sister, Charlene Pesci, his brother, Charles Kammerdeiner, his father-in-law, Richard Keener and his mother-in-law, Janet Keener, his sister-in-law, Fran and his nephew Jim Pesci.
Greg will be remembered by those who knew him as a hardworking and genuine man of character, and leaves an enduring imprint on the hearts of those who survive him.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 9:00-11:00 AM at D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield, CT, followed by a religious service led by Pastor Benjamin Pease at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 453 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford.
