

Howard Frederick “Fred” Gunn, beloved husband of Edna (Axelson) Gunn passed away surrounded by family, Saturday, August 13, 2016. He was born on June 8, 1926 in Bainsville, Ontario, the only child of Howard W. and Grace (Curry) Gunn. He was raised in Wethersfield and graduated from Wethersfield High School, where he was a standout track athlete. He then served two years with the United States Navy during World War II. He attended Morse Business College and worked for a short time at Stagg, Mather and Hough public accountants. He owned and operated Gunn’s Shell Service Station in Wethersfield for over forty years. He was a successful businessman and enjoyed sponsoring the Gunn’s Shell softball team. Many of his employees became life long friends. Fred and Edna married in May of 1948 in Hartford. Besides his wife, Fred is survived by his three children and their spouses– James (Joanne) Gunn of Wethersfield, Linda (Mark) Alexander of Waterford, and Jacquelyn (Dean) Fusco of Wethersfield. He was extremely proud of his seven grandsons: Matthew (Taylor), Christopher (Brienne), and Evan Gunn, Samuel and Austin Alexander and Jake and Dean Fusco. He is also survived by several cousins, including Lorraine Gordon of Port Orange, FL. Fred loved the outdoors and was extremely active, skiing and jogging until he was nearly eighty. His interests and accomplishments were many and varied. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending sporting events, especially watching his grandsons participate in hockey, baseball, football, track and cross-country. Along with his wife, he was an ardent Red Sox fan. His happiest times were spent with friends and family at his home in Vermont where he worked tirelessly to maintain and enhance his property.
Calling hours will be Thursday (August 18) from 5-8 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. Funeral service will be Friday (August 19) at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral chapel. The burial will be private at a later date.
